1.1 Million Americans Screwed Over by Hackers – What Now?

Alright, so here’s the deal: hackers decided to ruin the day for over a million Americans by targeting a life insurer. 🕵️‍♂️ Because why not? Everyone’s having a great time in 2025, right?

Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America got hit on July 16th. Classic. They figured it out the next day, July 17th, because, you know, hackers are courteous enough to leave a little note saying, “Hey, we were here!”

According to TechCrunch-which, let’s be honest, is probably just regurgitating press releases at this point-the hackers used social engineering to access a CRM system. 🤦‍♂️ Because apparently, convincing someone to hand over the keys is easier than actual hacking.

Have I Been Pwned (the site we all check after we’ve already been screwed) says 1.1 million people are affected. Names, emails, birthdays, phone numbers, addresses-basically everything except their favorite ice cream flavor. 🍦

BleepingComputer adds that 2.8 million records were stolen, including stuff like tax IDs, licenses, and marketing classifications. Because who doesn’t want their marketing classifications leaked? 🎉

Allianz, in their infinite wisdom, notified customers on August 1st and offered free identity theft restoration and credit monitoring. Wow, two whole years! 🥳 That’ll definitely fix the fact that someone out there now knows your mother’s maiden name.
