A significant cyberattack has impacted the private medical information of tens of thousands of people.
A recent report filed with the Maine Attorney General details a data security incident at Heart South Cardiovascular Group, a healthcare firm based in Alabama. The incident impacted 46,666 individuals, including three people in Maine. Heart South says they became aware on or around November 11, 2025, that an unauthorized party had claimed to have obtained company data.
Heart South announced that a thorough security review by independent experts found no signs of hacking or stolen data.
The company recently found out that someone illegally posted a small amount of patient information on the dark web. Heart South is now notifying all patients whose health information may have been affected.
The company reports that personal information potentially affected by the breach could include names along with details like Social Security numbers, birth dates, medical treatments, diagnoses, medications, and health insurance information.
The company also stated it hasn’t yet determined if anyone’s personal information was affected. They identified potentially impacted individuals on February 12, 2026, and started sending notifications in April 2026.
Heart South is providing free identity theft monitoring, and a law firm is investigating what happened.
