On a crisp day, when the city pretends to be bustling but merely patters its own ideas, Kraken’s guardian of security speaks with a certain grave humor. A shadowy band of criminals-the sort who haunt the glow of screens rather than the lanes of village streets-has contrived to extort the house, like a rake at a ball, with threats to unveil the hidden pages of clients’ lives.
In a fresh dispatch, Nick Percoco assures us that Kraken’s heart-the sturdy vaults of data and the fortunes entrusted by its patrons-remains unbreached; and that, as for those insinuating fiends, no negotiations shall be entertained. One would hope the vault is not given to gossip by the morning sun, yet here we are, listening to men in rooms of seriousness speak of breaches as if they were storms and the sea of cyberspace their only refuge.
“We are currently extorted by a criminal group threatening to release videos of our internal systems with client data shown if we do not comply with their demands.”
“It’s important to start with the most important points: our systems were never breached; funds were never at risk; we will not pay these criminals; we will not ever negotiate with bad actors.”
Percoco adds that only a small fraction of users may have felt the cold breath of this misfortune, and that authorities pursue the guilty with a steadiness that would shame even a hunter after a fox.
“Across both incidents, only a very small number of client accounts were potentially viewed – approximately 2,000 in total (0.02% of clients). Based on intelligence gathered across both incidents, along with extensive ongoing analysis, we believe there is sufficient evidence to support the identification and arrest of those responsible.”
According to Percoco, the first scene unfolded in February 2025, when a tip revealed a video on a criminal forum seemingly showing access to Kraken’s client-support avenues. The individual involved, identified as a member of the support team, had his access instantly withdrawn, and affected clients were notified with a note that felt almost like a courtesy of old times.
A second, similar episode appeared later, treated in the same manner. After these steps, the criminals issued extortion demands threatening to spill the materials to media and to the reach of social platforms, as if the town crier had merely changed his platform from bell to keyboard.
Kraken now moves in concert with industry partners and federal law enforcement across several jurisdictions to investigate the incidents, a procession somewhat more orderly than toasting breadcrumbs, yet with the same stubborn insistence on truth.
