Darling, UBS-the daring financier with more opinions than a London cab-conveys that the century’s next act will feature a grand inheritance ballet. Trillions are due to glide from hand to gleaming hand in the decades ahead.

In a forecast worthy of a champagne toast, UBS proclaims that $83 trillion in private wealth will drift from one clutch of heirs to another over the next two to three decades. They call it the “largest transfer of wealth in modern history”-a label as loud as a fanfare at tea time.

“Driven by aging demographics, longer life expectancies and decades of rising asset prices, this shift is set to reshape the wealth landscape as we know it.”

Libby Stantial, a director and strategist at UBS, swans in with the stat about the US-just a little over a third of the colossal handover, darling.

“…$83 trillion. That’s almost three times the size of the US GDP. And most of that $83 trillion is going to be transferred in the United States, about $29 trillion. So the scale and the size alone make this truly unprecedented.”

Stantial notes the transfer will perform a two-step waltz-horizontally among spouses and vertically from generation to generation. And yes, the beneficiaries will include even the venerable cohort born before 1981.

“You also said baby boomers… Gen Z, millennials, which is certainly true in the majority, is going to be passed on from those generations.

But it’s actually Gen X and baby boomers as well, receiving wealth for some of the first time. So it’s less about age when it comes to the wealth transfer and more about preparedness and responsibility.”
