Ex-NCA Officer’s Crypto Heist Unveiled: A Twist of Irony

Ah, the sweet taste of irony! Paul Chowles, erstwhile member of the dark web task force, has been sentenced for the very crime he was supposed to be fighting. The dastardly deed? Stealing Bitcoin from none other than Thomas White, co-founder of Silk Road 2.0, following his arrest in 2014.

Chowles, who pleaded guilty to theft and money laundering earlier this year, managed to pilfer 50 BTC (worth around $79,000 at the time) from White’s seized wallet. But alas, our cunning thief was not content with merely pocketing the digital loot. He attempted to hide his tracks using Bitcoin Fog, a crypto mixing service, and later converted some of the assets into cash or loaded them onto crypto-enabled debit cards.

The stolen funds initially went unnoticed, as investigators assumed White had managed to access his wallet. However, White later told the police that it had to be an insider job, triggering a deeper inquiry. Chowles had attended meetings about the investigation while quietly covering his tracks. Detectives later found one of his phones linked to the transfers, as well as notebooks containing account details and credentials tied to White’s holdings.

The CPS revealed that Chowles spent over £109,000, but profited by around £613,000 ($821,000) in total. Authorities have confirmed that confiscation proceedings are underway. And so, dear reader, we bid adieu to our erstwhile hero, who has now become the villain in his own twisted tale.
