Binance and BBVA: A Match Made in Crypto Heaven 🤑

It seems that the good folks over at Binance have finally decided to stop keeping all their eggs in one basket and have teamed up with the estimable BBVA, Spain’s third-largest lender, to offer off-exchange custody. This means that BBVA, with its vast experience in banking and its reputation for not being a complete nincompoop, will now hold client funds in the form of US Treasuries, which Binance accepts as margin for trades. Quite the arrangement, isn’t it?

The primary aim of this collaboration, as far as one can tell, is to reduce what they call “counterparty risk.” For those not in the know, this is the sort of risk that keeps you awake at night, wondering if your money will still be there when you wake up. Ever since the great FTX fiasco of 2022, where billions were lost and many a man’s hair turned prematurely white, investors have been clamoring for more secure options. Enter BBVA, with its strong “name recognition,” which, in layman’s terms, means that people trust it because they’ve seen its name on a lot of buildings and advertisements.

This partnership also reflects a growing trend of traditional banks dipping their toes into the crypto pond, thanks to clearer regulations in both the US and EU. It’s like the banks are saying, “If you can’t beat them, join them, and maybe make a bit of money while you’re at it.” BBVA, ever the trendsetter, has recently expanded its digital asset offerings, allowing its Spanish mobile app users to trade in bitcoin and ether, and even advising private banking clients to allocate up to 7% of their portfolios to cryptocurrencies. One can almost hear the collective gasp from the more conservative members of the financial community!

Binance, of course, is no stranger to working with independent custodians, having already partnered with the likes of Switzerland’s Sygnum and FlowBank. However, BBVA’s entry into the fray is a significant milestone, marking a step towards mainstream acceptance of crypto services. Who knew that the future of finance would involve so much hand-holding and cautious tiptoeing? 🕵️‍♂️
