Well, it looks like someone in Brazil just won the lottery – and by “won the lottery,” I mean they stole a whopping $100 million from the Central Bank of Brazil. I guess that’s one way to get your hands on some cash 💸.
According to a report by the AP (because who doesn’t love a good Associated Press story?), the hackers targeted Brazil’s PIX payment system. For those who don’t know, PIX is like the Venmo of Brazil – but instead of just sending your roommate money for rent, you can send millions of dollars to hackers. Convenient, right? 🤑
So, how did these clever hackers pull off this dastardly plan? Well, it’s quite simple really. They just bought some security credentials from a guy named João Roque, who worked at the software company C&M. I mean, who wouldn’t want to sell their security credentials to some shady characters for a quick buck? It’s not like it’s a recipe for disaster or anything 🤦♂️.
After getting their hands on the credentials, the hackers just waltzed into the C&M system and started initiating fake PIX operations. And just like that, $100 million disappeared into thin air – or rather, into the hackers’ bank accounts 💸.
Now, the police are trying to catch the hackers and freeze the stolen assets. Because, you know, it’s not like they’ve already spent the money on a private island or something 🏖️. The authorities have managed to block about half of the stolen funds, but I’m sure the hackers are just shaking in their boots 😂.
C&M has released a statement saying that they’re cooperating with the authorities and that the breach was probably due to unauthorized access to security credentials. Yeah, no kidding 🙄.
