Ethereum Crushes Rivals in Validator Count-The Others Barely Register

Key Highlights

  • Token Terminal’s latest Layer 1 ranking reveals Ethereum at an almost comical 921,600 validators, while Cardano struggles to muster 2,900, Algorand limps along with 1,600, and Solana barely scrapes 784.
  • Ethereum.org, in an almost boastful aside, lists 922,228 validators and a staggering 38.7 million ETH staked-a veritable fortress of capital and code.
  • Cross-chain comparisons are tricky, mostly because everyone seems to have invented their own rules: Cardano counts stake pools, Solana boasts 1000+ “independent” validators, and Algorand had 3,075 nodes as of Q1 2025, give or take a few.

In the curious theatre of Layer 1 blockchains, Ethereum remains the undisputed prima donna, flaunting roughly 922,200 validators. Its nearest rivals-Cardano, Algorand, and Solana-might be present, but their numbers are scarcely worth the footnote. One can almost hear the faint whimper of their servers.

Ethereum’s own staking page adds insult to injury: 38,706,889 ETH staked, 922,228 validators, a network so fortified that any attacker would require the audacity of a Bond villain armed with both ETH and validators in equal measure.

Cardano, modestly occupying second place, serves as a polite reminder that someone must be runner-up. Yet its minuscule validator count is dwarfed so thoroughly that it might as well be congratulating itself for finishing the marathon by arriving at the village fete while Ethereum has already crossed the Atlantic.

Context, of course, is everything. Cardano’s proof-of-stake relies on stake pools, where ADA holders entrust their coins to the benevolent oversight of pool operators. Ethereum’s validators, by contrast, are singularly dedicated souls, each a soldier in the chain’s bulwark.

Solana and Algorand pursue their own curious architectures. Solana allows delegations to validator nodes, with 1000+ independent validators winking at decentralization. Algorand, meanwhile, relies on repeaters and validators, anyone welcome to participate, though few seem compelled.

The unmissable moral of this tale: Ethereum towers over its peers in validator security, a monolith of assurance. The others play minor roles in the wider proof-of-stake drama, but when it comes to raw numbers, they are merely background extras in a performance dominated by Ethereum’s spectacular lead.
