In a gesture as magnanimous as a miser parting with his last farthing, Google has condescended to disperse a paltry $68 million to silence the impertinent accusations that it has been eavesdropping on its unsuspecting clientele. The tech behemoth, with a hauteur befitting a Victorian aristocrat, denies all wrongdoing, yet its purse strings tell a different tale.
According to the settlement’s grand viziers, this sum is to appease the rabble who claim that Google’s Assistant, that modern-day Jeeves, has been recording their every trivial murmur without so much as a by-your-leave. The device, it seems, suffers from a peculiar affliction known as “false accepts,” wherein it mistakes the rustle of curtains for a command to commence its auditory espionage.
The lawsuit, filed in the hallowed halls of the US District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, alleges that Google’s gadgets have been as discreet as a town crier in a library. Those who have had the misfortune of owning a Google-made device, or the temerity to use its Assistant, between May 18th, 2016, and March 19th, 2026, are now eligible to partake in this financial balm.
The $68 million, after being picked clean by lawyers, administrators, and the taxman, will be distributed to the aggrieved in a manner as equitable as a game of musical chairs. Device owners shall receive four points per gadget, up to three devices, while the mere users or household members are granted a single point, a gesture as generous as a crumb from the master’s table.
The afflicted may submit their claims through the designated portal by August 27th, though one wonders if the effort will yield more than a few coppers. Google, with a straight face, maintains its innocence, declaring that the settlement is merely a pragmatic dodge of the legal quagmire, and not an admission of guilt.
“The Court did not decide in favor of the Plaintiffs or Google. Instead, both sides agreed to a Settlement. That way, both sides avoid the costs and risks of a trial, and the Settlement Class Members will receive the benefits described in this Notice, whereas they might otherwise get nothing. The proposed Settlement does not mean that any law was broken or that Google did anything wrong.”
