Ah, my dear reader, it appears that Governor Gavin Newsom of California, that splendid bloke with a penchant for drama, has dashed in like a knight in shining armor, brandishing fresh laws to wallop some regulatory safeguards upon those cheeky social media platforms and their AI companion chatbot chums. All in the noble quest to shield the kiddies, don’t you know? 😏
With a Monday pronouncement from the governor’s office, the chap signed several bills into law – veritable feasts for the inkwell, what? The aim? To compel platforms to trot out age verification gizmos, protocols for tackling suicide and self-harm woes, and stern warnings for those companion chatbots. And the AI bill, SB 243, hatched by state Senators Steve Padilla and Josh Becker back in January, is the pièce de résistance, my word.
Padilla, the jolly good senator, regaled us with tales of nippers chatting with these AI bots, leading to – horrors! – some allegedly egging on suicidal thoughts. The bill demands these platforms confess to minors that the chums are mere AI concoctions, utterly unsuitable for tender ears, as per Padilla’s wisdom.
“This technology can be a ripping educational and research tool,” Padilla quipped in September, “but left to their tricks, the Tech Industry would rather snag the youths’ gazes and glue them there, at the expense of jolly good real-world chums with actual hearts pumping.” Sarcasm drips like treacle, eh? 😂
This law, my esteemed chum, shall likely knock on the doors of social media moguls and sites peddling AI wares to Californians, including those decentralized sorts and gaming haunts. Beyond chatbot watchdogs, it seeks to pin down claims of the technology “acting autonomously,” so companies can’t slink off from liability like some eel in an overcoat.
SB 243 is slated to kick off in January 2026, a date marked for a spot of regulatory revelry.
Whispers abound of AI chatbots blurting out responses that might encourage the young to self-harm or fray mental health ropes. Utah’s Governor Spencer Cox, not to be outdone, signed akin bills in 2024, now active since May, mandating chatbots to admit they’re not flesh-and-blood, but mechanical marvels.
Federal Flurries Amidst AI’s Wacky Waltz
In June, Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis unveiled the Responsible Innovation and Safe Expertise (RISE) Act, dishing out “immunity from civil liability” for AI wizards facing legal jabs from titans in healthcare, law, finance, and other economy-saving circus acts.
The bill stirred a cauldron of mixed toasts and was punted to the House Committee on Education and Workforce, where one imagines some splendid beard-tugging sessions. 😉
