Roaring Kitty Hack Drains $2.8M: Solana Meme Coin Scam Shocks Traders

Roaring Kitty hack drains $2.8M from traders

On May 11th, someone illegally accessed Keith Gill’s verified X account. They used his profile, known as Roaring Kitty, to promote and then quickly sell a new, joke cryptocurrency based on Solana.

Summary

  • The compromised account promoted Red Kitten Crew (RKC) on Pump.fun, pushing its market cap briefly to $12 million.
  • The developer spent $1,950 across 10 wallets to acquire 39.5% of RKC supply, then sold for approximately $611,000.
  • Posts were deleted within an hour; over 80 wallets extracted a combined $2.86 million during the rally.

After being inactive for over a year, Gill’s official X (formerly Twitter) account posted twice around 9:13 PM UTC on May 11th. The posts promoted a new meme coin called Red Kitten Crew (RKC) on the Solana blockchain, sharing its contract address and a related cartoon image with the phrase “red bandit crew 4 life.” Both posts were quickly removed, within about an hour.

As an on-chain analyst, I was among the first to notice something was wrong. It quickly became clear the account had been compromised, and within a short period, over 80 wallets drained a total of $2,864,364. This happened during a quick price increase, making it even more noticeable.

Within 20 minutes of being posted, RKC’s market value quickly rose to between $11 and $12 million, but then fell dramatically after the posts were taken down.

How the dump played out

Lookonchain, a company that analyzes blockchain data, discovered that a developer used around $1,950 (20 SOL) across ten different digital wallets to buy 395.18 million RKC tokens. This represents 39.52% of all RKC tokens in existence.

The wallets then sold all of their holdings for 5,071 SOL, which was around $495,000. The developer also earned about $118,000 in fees from the Pump.fun platform, receiving 1,209 SOL.

Online, people have been speculating that Kevin Gill, brother of Keith Gill, might be involved in the incident, after a video clip appeared to show someone who looks like him celebrating its beginning. So far, neither Keith Gill, Kevin Gill, nor anyone speaking for them has confirmed or denied these claims, and there’s no solid proof to support them.

Pattern matches previous X hacks

This latest event is similar to previous incidents on the Solana network. In early 2025, the official X account for Pump.fun was temporarily hacked and used to advertise a fraudulent token. Before that, in December 2024, the X account of Animoca co-founder Yat Siu was compromised and used to promote a meme coin built on Solana.

GameStop shares rose as much as 13% during the RKC episode before erasing all gains.

Keith Gill, known for sparking the 2021 GameStop stock surge with his Reddit analysis, has never publicly endorsed any meme coins and hasn’t commented on recent account activity. He first gained attention for his GameStop predictions, which led to a historic short squeeze in the stock market.
