At the eighth meeting of the EU and Mexico, two mighty powers, after learning that the United States has become somewhat of a favourite, have detained themselves on a most splendid trade pact celebrating a sum of five thousand million euros.
-
Principal Points:
-
Following the sealing of a €5B contract, Mexico and the EU shall, with the pride of a good governess, endeavour to curtail the widespread laundering of money by the mysterious, ever‑elusive world of “crypto”.
-
These discussions shall focus upon families such as the Sinaloa Cartel, notorious for exploiting the newfangled “crypto‑cash” to launder fortunes across the globe.
-
The two households-Mexico and the EU-will, in the forthcoming days, raise a dialogued discussion to face the looming threats of “crypto‑dangers.”
Mexico and the EU To Collaborate To Curb crypto Money Laundering Activities
Even as the use of cryptocurrency and digital money in the laundering of illicit earnings has grown more common than the latest news in the local paper, states have begun comporting themselves to exchange information and raise vigilance upon these flowing streams.
The honorable Roberto Velasco Álvarez, Mexico’s Foreign Minister, and the esteemed Kaja Kallas, Vice‑President of the European Commission, unveiled that the two nations are crafting ways to cooperate in restraining the nefarious practice of “crypto‑laundering” across both jurisdictions.

The declaration was delivered at a press conference during the 8th Mexico‑EU Summit, where Mr. Claudia Sheimbaum, President of Mexico, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, signed a trade agreement that bequeaths a €5 billion investment to Mexico.
“Regarding security cooperation between Mexico and the European Union, we discussed today how criminal organisations are conducting activities on a global scale-such as money laundering-and of course matters connected to the use of cryptocurrencies for these types of illicit activities,” Mr. Álvarez declared.
He further indicated that both parties intend to “maintain a dialogue and explore opportunities for cooperation to confront these threats and activities.”
The collaboration between Mexico and the EU is pertinent, given that the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most formidable drug trafficking organisations in the western hemisphere, has undertakings in Europe.
In May 2025, Europol and the French National Gendarmerie disbanded an organisation that produced and distributed methamphetamine with help from the Sinaloa cartel, using cryptocurrency to facilitate their illegal financial transactions.
Recently, the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned six individuals and two companies for their involvement in money laundering activities.
The group received cash in bulk from the sale of illicit drugs in the U.S. and exchanged it for cryptocurrency to be sent to the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico, according to the OFAC.
In July 2025, the DEA also seized $10 billion in cryptocurrency linked to cartel activities.
