Ah, dear reader, it seems that Vitalik Buterin, in his usual mixture of brilliance and gentle eccentricity, has embarked on yet another crusade to tame the mercurial spirit of Ethereum finality. Here’s the curious tale of Minimmit versus the venerable Casper FFG.
One could imagine Vitalik, perched on some invisible cloud of computation, penning a post on X, declaring the virtues of Minimmit as though it were a delicate porcelain teacup rather than a proposal for blockchain engineering. He suggests-quite audaciously-that by sacrificing a modest portion of fault tolerance, one might gain stronger safeguards against the dread specter of worst-case attacks.
Our hero, a tireless champion of Ethereum’s security, insists this compromise is not merely tolerable but indeed preferable-a curious twist, considering most would clutch their hats and faint at the notion of trading safety for prudence.
The Duel of Titans: Minimmit and Casper FFG
Casper FFG, the venerable old knight, requires two rounds of voting to bestow the finality crown upon a block. Validators dutifully sign once to “justify,” then again to “finalize”-a process as ceremonious as a Russian ball. Minimmit, cheeky and efficient, trims this ritual to a single round, reducing fault tolerance from 33% to a mere 17%.
Ah, yes, one might gasp! A miscreant with but 17% of staked ETH could halt finality, versus 33% under Casper FFG. But Vitalik, ever the philosopher-engineer, gestures to the wider vista: halting finality is a mere trifle compared to the dread of censorship attacks.
Both systems, he notes, demand a fiendish 50% of staked ETH to perform such censorship, leaving neither protocol willing to bend to the whims of a mischievous attacker.
Censorship: The True Villain
Vitalik draws a sharp distinction: revert finality, and the blockchain leaves an indelible trail, inviting punishment with all the subtlety of a tax collector at a country fair. Censorship, however, skulks in the shadows, requiring social coordination to counter and leaving no automatic retribution.
Under Casper FFG, a villain holding more than 67% of staked ETH may finalize blocks while practicing censorship. Minimmit raises this bar to 83%, making such nefarious endeavors substantially harder. One might almost admire the audacity required.
And should a software bug arise, Casper FFG might fall to 67% client compromise; Minimmit, in its deliberate wisdom, demands 83%-a gracious allowance for human error, almost as if the system whispered, “Fear not, my dear coders, there is time to mend.”

Two Chains: A Tale of Prudence
Vitalik propounds a charmingly simple principle: finality should truly mean final. When calamity strikes, two chains running side by side are preferable to a solitary errant chain. Minimmit broadens the scenarios for this “dueling chains” ballet, granting developers and validators a precious window to investigate the misstep.
He even dabbles in economics, noting that with 15 million ETH staked, reverting finality under Minimmit still exacts a toll of 17%, roughly 2.5 million ETH-a sum large enough to stagger the imagination. One can almost picture Vitalik smirking: if a villain has that much capital, surely there are far better misadventures than attacking Ethereum.
Discussing fast finality with people, it is the move to 1 voting round that causes most concern since it ostensibly reduces security from 33% to ~17%.
Here V explains why this is fine, and maybe even better than the status quo.

Ben Edgington of Ethereum’s consensus team echoed these thoughts on X, noting that the single-round voting stirs the most debate. He beckons bridges and interoperability platforms to discuss fast finality-a delicate invitation for the ecosystem to join in polite discourse, or at least polite argumentation.
